Hands down, my #1 go-to Essential oil is Tea tree oil, also known as Melaleuca. I truly do put that on shit on everything! From my face to my teeth, to my floors to my toilet.
By far it’s the essential oil I use the most! And I use a lot of essential oils!
I use it to clean my whole house and it’s become an important part of my skin care routine over the last year as I work on healing a case of sudden onset adult acne that sprang up following a bad case of what I can only assume was strep throat.
One of the very first things I first things I teach clients to do as they begin their healing journey, is to get rid of the unnecessary chemicals gunking up their system and slowing their healing process.
Removing chemicals from your home
is a crucial step to healing.
My Javex, Mr. Clean and Vim loving mama will attest to my “sticklerness” in this area. It’s just unnecessary and a no-go in our home! And you know what??? I think I may have started converting her! At least somewhat! Because she’s using it now too!
And really guys, you know yourself how friggen strong cleaning products are! Just smell them for goodness sakes! You know all of those fumes and perfumes just can’t be good for you! And if you have any doubts, then you have to check out this awesome resource on the safety of products at the Environmental Working Group HERE. This is a resource I use constantly and I feel it’s a great tool for anyone looking to healthify their home and life.
Seriously, I challenge you to check out a few of your dearest cleaning products to see how they rate and let me know what you find in the comments below!
You’ll likely be looking for alternatives pretty quickly. Especially if you’re looking to get healthy and ditch chronic symptoms you’ve been living with.
I tell ya, you’d be surprised at how good simple vinegar, water and tea tree oil work to safely clean your home.
But you’re probably thinking “What about all the germs???”.
Firstly, the bacteria-busting craze is partly what got us in the state we are in today! Believe it or not, 90% of our DNA is made up of bacteria DNA! 3-5 lbs of bacteria are living in and on our bodies and are crucial to healthy immune function. And when you’re out to kill bad bacteria, you’re also killing the good! So it’s a good idea to cut back on that anywho.
But unlike triclosan used in many antibacterial, one of tea tree oil’s amazing properties is its ability to kills pathogenic bacteria and leaves beneficial bacteria unharmed.
Tea tree oil truly is nature’s medicine!!! Just Pubmed it and see. This one study,
Essential oils used in aromatherapy: A systemic review, speaks to a wide variety of benefits of a variety of oils including Tea tree oil.
Benefits & Properties of Tea tree oil that make it so amazing:
- Potent Insecticidal
- Immune stimulant
Ways it can be used:
- All-purpose cleaner (see my recipe below)
- Diffuser: Aromatherapy (especially good for respiratory issues like bronchitis, asthma, congestion, cough,…)
- Skin toner
- Bug repellent
- Treating cold sores, warts, scars and acne
- Cleaning wounds
- Homemade creams, lotions, shampoos, etc.
*For most applications, tea tree oil must be diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut oil, jojoba oil or diluted in water to avoid irritation.
Here’s a little bit on how I use it:
And if you’re wondering what my recipe is for my everyday cleaner, here it is:
In a spray bottle:
- 1 part white vinegar
- 2 parts water
- 30 drops of Tea tree oil
I use this to clean counters, sinks, stove, bathrooms, floors, you name it!
It’s also a dream to clean those hard to clean new style tubs who always get that yukky grim where the bath water level sits. And when I want extra guns, say like if the kiddos are sick (which hasn’t happened in years btw, knock on wood) I’d use a little 2% peroxide on surfaces that neede a real thorough disinfecting. Doubling up the germ-killing power and much safer alternative to bleach!
I also use 1 drop of tea tree oil with a quarter size of witch hazel, that I mix in my palm before applying to my face, as a toner and to help to reduce swelling and slow acne when flares occur.
So if you’re looking to get healthy, prevent unnecessary disease or just looking to healthify your home, I definitely recommend you add a good Tea tree essential oil to your arsenal. You’ll want to make sure it’s 100% pure/undiluted.
